Painting in Toronto's weather
Toronto's weather can pose some Toronto painting troubles
Painting in Toronto can be tricky business. With hot and humid summers and bitter cold winters, Toronto painters and paint alike have their work cut out for them. It's important to take into consideration humidity and outside temperatures especially on exterior painting jobs, occasionally interior painting can also be influenced by the temperature outside depending on how well the interior is insulated.
Expansion with heat and contraction with cold are typical of Toronto seasons, add moisture and you're looking at contributing factors to failing paint jobs. Look for failing paint jobs especially where the surface has not had the proper pre-paint preparation. Before applying a fresh coat of paint, when possible old failing paint needs to be removed by heating and/or surface treatments followed by scraping. The resulting surface should be sanded to insure a high quality and uniform bonding of the paint to the substrate. For the paint application, it's important to use quality products on all paint applications you want to last but especially so when faced with the potential issues arising out of painting in Toronto's seasonal temperature variance. A quality paint product will be able to withstand the relentless extremes of Toronto's weather with much more longevity.
Most paint also has a minimum temperature, typically around 10 degrees Celsius, so this must also be taken into consideration when painting in Toronto. Surface temperatures can vary enormously compared to ambient temperature attention is needed when painting interiors during the bitter cold seasons as not all walls are insulated adequately. Condensation is also a potential hazard, in certain circumstances moisture in the warm air can form small water droplets on the cold interior walls that border on the exterior of the building. An effective solution is to use space heaters and dehumidifiers in these situations to prevent cold air and moisture from posing these sorts of hazards but are limited in their efficiency depending on variables such as how large the interior is, how thick the walls might be and how extreme the cold is.
